How were the colonial education systems of Southeast Asian countries similar?
This project examines how contemporary education systems still bear traces of colonial education. The project highlights how across these different countries, colonial education has always been in service of the coloniser’s goals of economic gain or maintaining dominance over local communities. It concludes that traces of colonial education remain primarily in the continued usage of colonial languages as the administrative languages in multiple countries, and a legacy of racial segregation and inequality in education. As a whole, the team suggests that we must understand how colonialism leaves long-lasting effects that continue to impact and shape our national development in the present.
