The White Man vs. The Coloured Woman: A Look into the differences between Western and Southeast Asian Literature

"Emily of Emerald Hill" by Stella Kon

"The Merchant of Venice" by William Shakespeare

"The White Man vs The Coloured Woman: A Look Into the Differences between Western and Southeast Asian Literature" is a comparative analysis of Singaporean play Emily of Emerald Hill by Stella Kon, and William Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice. In examining both plays' depictions of women across 16th century England and 20th century Singapore, the group poses the following question: Compared to Western literature, how does local literature portray the feminist struggle? While both the Singaporean play and the Shakespearean explore the patriarchal system in their respective societies, neither is able to truly overcome it.
